Opening Keynote Speaker
Janie Cravens has 35+ years experience in adoption, infertility, birthparent concerns, orphanages, child development, attachment, teaching and consultation. She was one of the pioneers of open adoption, and continues to be involved in the direct practice of this approach.
Cravens teaches seminars in the US and abroad on Attachment, Life-long issues in adoption built families, and Orphanage milieu . She consults to agencies regarding policies and practice, instructs social workers on how to provide ethical, respectful services, and provides training to out-of-home caregivers regarding attachment, positive discipline, and sex abuse prevention. Cravens provides consultations on difficult adoption/foster cases, search and reunion, media comment, and serves as an expert in legal disputes.
Her education is a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a Master’s degree in Social Work (received from The Worden School, OLLU, 1979), and she holds the designation of Advanced Clinical Practitioner, Licensed Child Placing Agency Administrator, and CEU Grantor for the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners.
Closing Keynote Speaker
Honorable Judge John J. Romero, Jr. serves in the Second Judicial District Court as Presiding Judge of the Children’s Court Division. The cases before him include delinquency matters, child welfare and adoptions. He presides over the Program for the Empowerment of Girls (PEG), an intensive multi-agency juvenile probation program for girls who have some type of violence and abuse in their history.
Judge Romero is Co-Chair of the Children’s Court Improvement Commission and is Chair of the NM Children’s Court Judges Association. He was the first judge in the country to be recognized as a Certified Child Welfare Law Specialist by the ABA-accredited National Association of Counsel for Children. In 2014, Judge Romero received the New Mexico Voices for Children Alice King Public Service Award. He serves on the Board of Directors of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. Judge Romero and his family served as a foster family before his appointment to the bench.
