The New Mexico Children’s Law Institute (CLI) is seeking proposals for inspirational, skill building, and solution focused workshops for the 27th annual conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico, January 8-10, 2020.

Join us in exploring the theme: “Walking the Talk: Prevention, Support, and Radical Acceptance”
The 2020 annual conference theme looks forward to the implementation of recent changes in our child welfare, juvenile justice, and children’s legal systems, with an emphasis on putting the values of prevention, support, and radical acceptance into practice. While safety and risk remain important considerations, we are challenging our systems to address concerns by upholding the innate, imperative, and influential connections that exist within families and their surrounding community.
With the start of a new decade, a new administration, and new national and state-wide initiatives, we have an opportunity to move innovative ideas towards improved outcomes for the children, youth and families we serve. What does it look like to shift our systems’ efforts from reactive to preventative? How can we leverage the strengths of our communities to provide the support that allows families to thrive? How can each one of us renew our commitment to break ineffective patterns of judgement and move towards the radical acceptance of others that restores hope and humanity in our communities?
The CLI is a statewide, multidisciplinary conference which brings over 1,000 various professionals together in a unique learning environment focused on improving the health, safety, and well-being of New Mexico’s children and families.
Criteria for Submission (see full application questions in form below):
We are looking for 1.5 hour long workshops that relate to child welfare, juvenile justice, service providers, advocates, educators, and legal professionals in those systems. Workshops can be geared toward one or more professions. We are seeking intermediate and advanced presentations for experienced professionals and volunteers. Academic paper proposals are not likely to be accepted.
To be considered, proposals must encompass the following criteria:
- Relevance to conference theme and attendees.
- Use of innovative and applicable knowledge that is solution focused.
- Incorporation of tools for skill building.
- Include audience interaction and critical thinking.
- Provide real world application that can be applied to an attendees’ individual area of expertise.
- Content related specifically to the cultures in New Mexico and the particular and unique challenges we face.
- Examples of the resource(s) you will utilize during the workshop and share with participants (handouts, PowerPoint slides, additional resources etc.).
Any topics that meet criteria are welcome. We are looking specifically for intermediate and advanced solution focused workshops on the following topics, however the following is not an exhaustive list and additional topics will be considered:
- Actualizing change at the individual and system levels
- Improving understanding around the legal processes related to child welfare and juvenile justice
- Solution focused approaches to address implicit bias, racism, sexism. homophobia,or transphobia
- Community Resources: How to access, how to get the most from, how to build your own
- Collaborations across systems
- Building authentic relationships
- Leadership at every level
- Communication, language, conflict resolution
- Family engagement
- Reducing ethnic disparities
- Importance of maintaining familial connections
- Alternatives to removal from the home
- Youth voice/Resources for youth
- Deeper understanding about impact of trauma and solution focused approaches to addressing trauma at all levels in the system.
- Substance Use: Current substances, current treatments, what is working
- Increasing resiliency in our children, youth, families and ourselves.
- Focus on working with indigenous populations/ within tribal systems
- Innovative approaches to self-care, understanding secondary trauma, mindfulness, etc.

- Name and Contact info for Primary Presenter
- Proposed Session Title or Topic
- A biography for each presenter (150-200 words) which includes education and credentials as applicable (required for CEU/CLEs), and written in the third person.
- Session Summary (up to 300 words) intended for the conference program.
- An abstract which includes:
- How does your workshop respond to the conference theme?
- Primary learning objectives or goals for workshop
- Describe how your workshop will use innovative and applicable knowledge that is solution focused.
- Presentation methodology: describe how your workshop will be experiential, interactive, etc.
- Describe the intended audience and how this will be intermediate or advanced content.
- Will this workshop contain a specific focus on the cultures of New Mexico? If yes, please describe.
- Indicate if this material has been previously presented. If yes, indicate when and where.
- Include all materials including copy of power points or other handouts and links to additional resources on your topic. Note: if you do not have all materials ready to submit please describe what your materials will be and acknowledge the expectation that all presentations must have some written materials available for participants prior to the conference. All materials will be uploaded onto conference mobile app. If your workshop has specific materials that must be read prior to the session please indicate.
- Availability to present the afternoon of January 8th, all day on January 9th, and the morning of January 10th. Please indicate any day or time that you are NOT available to present.
